I recently had a chance to meet the owner the Angler Atlas website and the MyCatch Mobile application. Sean Simmons and I discussed this companies mission to help conservation efforts to keep our lakes, rivers and oceans productive for all anglers.
The MyCatch application records anglers catches in many different tournaments across North America and keeps the specific GPS information private. His company is sharing these large data sets to advance research into North American water bodies and to help conservation of all fish populations.
Hopefully his data collection method can replace the destructive methods like Gill netting that is still used by many governments organization to determine fish populations.
As anglers we should support efforts like this and request local government agencies to embrace modern technology for fish population surveys.
